Musician · Educator · Researcher

Bio

Luke Chiang is a Taiwanese-born Canadian musician based in Montréal, Québec. As a violinist, conductor, and violist, he explores how music shares stories in a community. While classically trained, he has enjoyed music-making across various cultural traditions, including Jazz and Hindustani. As an educator and researcher, he is passionate about increasing accessibility to the opportunity to learn through his research in the areas of biomechanics and neuropsychology.

Whether in contexts of solo, chamber or orchestral performances, Luke values the democratic process from which the music emerges, where stories are told, heard, synthesized and then shared. As an educator, he enjoys exploring this special process with students, through which a story emerges and is shared.

Luke counts himself lucky to have had the chance to work with his teachers across his training in Calgary, San Francisco, and Montréal: William Van Der Sloot, Ian Swensen, Elizabeth Blummenstock, and Guillaume Sutre. His education was made possible by donors and sponsors, and he holds dear to his heart the chance to pay it forward to others in his work at the El Sistema program organized by the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal. His students serve as an inspiration to him, and he is lucky to have students that teach him more than he could ever imagine.
